Getting Motivated for Recovery

You may be wondering what’s next?

Now that I’m feeling motivated for recovery, what’s next?

Before I get into what’s next I want to share a story with you.

Around thirteen years ago I began my training to become a therapist. I assumed it would give me everything I needed so I could support others like me, who struggled with Disordered Eating. I also assumed that it would help me reach full recovery too.

But what happened next caught me by surprise. My therapy training just wasn’t enough. Disordered Eating is complex and crazy as it sounds, we weren’t given specific training in this area.

I wanted to better serve my clients and find answers for myself. So what did I do?

I signed up for one training course after the next. In total I spent 11 years training in many different approaches in a drive to understand how best to support recovery.

I took everything I had learned from my inspiring trainers and my amazing clients and began to create a recovery framework.

My Five Step Recovery Framework

5 (6).png

Each time I worked with a client this is the framework I would follow and I was seeing success.

“Celia helped me find and develop ways of feeling more comfortable in my own skin and in the world. I count myself enormously lucky to have found my way to Celia.”

My clients were resolving their difficulties with food, they were learning to trust their bodies, finding confidence in themselves and improving their relationships. But something wasn’t right. I was successfully helping others but I was still stuck.

I hated that I was stuck, I hated that my relationship with my body continued to be so negative.

What if I’d never fully recover?

What if recovery just wasn’t possible for me?

I then discovered the missing piece.

I was doing some additional training and someone had mentioned Parts Work. It’s this idea that inside of us we have different parts who have different thoughts, beliefs and feelings.

When these Parts are working together we thrive, and when they are isolated or in conflict we get stuck.  I learned that I was stuck because Parts of me were stuck.

I immersed myself in Parts work training and learned as much as I could about how to support my Parts to work together. This was the missing piece that I’d been looking for all these years.

This was the missing piece that led to my full recovery.

It was a huge discovery. SO huge that it led to the creation of my second framework.

My Three Step Parts Work Model

Integrating this model with my original recovery framework was life changing for me and for my clients.

My clients weren’t just learning how to improve their relationship with food they were learning how to trust their bodies, how to inhabit their bodies. They were learning how to attune and attend to their needs, free of guilt, fear and shame. It was amazing to witness.

Then the unexpected happened. No one could have predicted what would happened next.

Covid came and changed everything. Unable to meet clients face to face, I began meeting clients online instead. I was unsure at first as this was a new experience for both me and my clients. It turned out that being online was a great way of working.

It offered both me and my clients greater flexibility and privacy. Clients were able to work with me from the comfort of their own homes.

I began training online too and I loved it. It was much more affordable and it was so convenient. I could learn at a time and pace that suited me, that fit in with my busy schedule. I also benefited hugely from online community support, both personally and professionally, that I could access from around the world.

This was a game changer. I began to realise the huge potential for connection, learning and healing online.

At the same time I saw the huge impact Covid had on those of us affected by Disordered Eating. It became even harder to access to support as waiting times rapidly escalated.

I was also aware that prior to Covid there were already financial barriers to accessing private one to one support for those on low incomes or who had difficulties with insurance providers, but Covid just made this worse.

It got me thinking, what if I could find a way to offer what I do, to as many people as possible, in a way that was even better than what I currently offered?

I spent the next 18 months committed to developing an online recovery programme for disordered eating.  I worked days, nights, weekends, writing and re-writing, learning about how to create the best programme I possibly could.

It needed to be accessible AND affordable. I knew people were suffering unnecessarily and struggling to access the support they needed, when they needed it, and I knew I could provide a solution.

With all this in mind Beyond the Body® was born.

Crazy right?

Considering that waiting times for support in my country (the UK) can be anything up to eighteen months, this is a game changer. You can start your recovery the day you sign up.

Some of you may have had negative experiences with other providers or are having a hard time accessing the support you need because of your body size.

Did you know that 94% of us with disordered eating live in a medium or larger sized body?

That’s nearly all of us.

The irony is that living in a medium to larger sized body leads to delays in our disordered eating being taken seriously, it leads to delays in being assessed and it leads to delays in accessing treatment. The research is clear, living in a higher weight body is a barrier for many of us accessing the support we need.

We take a different approach. We value everybody in EVERY body and take a weight inclusive stance. We are focused on creating a safe, learning space of compassion, curiosity and acceptance for all.

So LET'S RECAP on what you'll have access to:
